Celebrations in the Western Algarve

Ferragudo in the Western Algarve was the setting for food, dancing, drink and fireworks as the town celebrated their patron saint, Our Lady of Conception. As with so many Portuguese towns, fishing is important to the survival and regular income for the community and to this end all the fishing boats were blessed followed by a procession through the cobble-stone streets.

For centuries these celebrations have been held every year and reflect the wonderful lifestyle enjoyed by the Portuguese people. Dancing, drinking, good food, tradition, celebration and happiness.

The coastal town also show cased their latest addition, a brand new, state of the art life boat, the new boat was also blessed during the celebrations.

Property Highlight: Stylish apartments, Tavira, Algarve.

Tavira is fast becoming one of the most sort after areas in the Algarve. While the western Algarve has become very commercial and busy the Eastern Algarve remains traditional, retaining its culture and heritage, this is the real Portugal.

Beautiful architecture, the river side markets and restaurants, the cobble streets and ofcourse the breath taking roman arched bridge have become reasons why more and more people are looking for property in this area.

Our highlighted property is located on the outskirts of Tavira, where owners can enjoy the peace and quiet of the surrounding almond and fruit tree plantations but also be close enough to the town, its restaurants, market and shops.
These stylish apartments are beautifully finished, including fully fitted kitchens, spacious balconies, stone kitchen counter tops, wooden flooring in the bedrooms, double glazed windows, electric shutters and basement parking.
The best thing about this property is probably the roof terrace, each unit has allocated space on the roof, and the views from there is absolutely breath taking.

First Algarve Football team in Portugals Premier division in 7 years

Olhanense became the first Algarve football team to qualify for Liga Sagres in 7 years. The last team to play in Portugals top flight was Farense way back in the 2002/2003 season.

The small club unexpectedly won the Liga Vitalis and gained promotion for the first time in the clubs history. Coached by legenadary Portuguese defender Jorge Costa, it will be interesting to see how the team performs againts the big teams of Portugal, namely; Porto, Sporting Lisbon and Benfica.

Their home ground is situated in Olhao in the Eastern Algarve and there has been much debate about whether or not the team should play from the Algarve stadium (below) in Faro which holds 20,000 more and might attract more support for the only Algarve team represented in the Portuguese top flight. The team might be in a position to enjoy support from residence of Tavira, Faro and even Albufeira.

The team opened up their 2009/2010 campaign with a hard fought 0-0 draw away to Naval.

Good luck Olhanense for the coming season.

The legend of Olhos d' Agua, Albufeira

'Olhos d‘ Água', Albufeira in the Central Algarve, which literally translated means
“Eyes of Water”, takes its name from the numerous fresh-water springs that bubble up
both on the beach and off-shore underwater (only visible during the low tide) . . .

Legend has it that the “Eyes of Water” were discovered by a local
shepherd who found it strange that the sheep would often wonder off
to the beachfront during the low tide . . .

The shepherd followed the herd and discovered that the sheep were
simply quenching their thirst on the beachfront.

Retiring in the algarve? Retire in Portugal?

Northern Europeans are the main group of foreigners (expatriates) who take up residency in Portugal. British, Germans and Scandinavians are the most typical retirees who predominantly buy homes or apartments in the Algarve i.e. Tavira, Almancil, Albufeira, Carvoeiro and Lagos or more recently the Silver Coast i.e. Obidos, São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré. The more affluent homeowners tend to buy villas or property in the exclusive Algarve resorts of Quinta da Lago, Val de Lobo and Vilamoura or Lisbon and Silver Coast. Expatriates are attracted to the cosmopolitan lifestyle that the Algarve has to offer with an estimated 33% of the resident population speaking a foreign language (predominantly English). Expatriates enjoy the moderate climate, security, golf and relaxed Portuguese lifestyle. With over 300 days of sunshine per annum, the health benefits of the warm sunny climate and stress free life style contribute to your longevity and happiness rather the harsh grey, cold and wet climate you have been accustomed to back home.

Reasons for retiring in Portugal

Climate: The advantages of living in a warmer climate are obvious and result in an improved quality of life and often an increased life expectancy for retirees. A better climate also provides ample opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities, such as gardening, golf, tennis or walking, during your increased leisure time.
Lower Cost of Living: Portugal is one of the least expensive countries in Europe to visit or retire to. The Portuguese have a comfortable lifestyle with the country having experienced steady economic growth and relatively low unemployment.
Safety and Stability: Portugal has no enemies and therefore no terrorist factions operating on the fringe Portuguese society. The peaceful nature of the Portuguese and a culture of respect for other peoples right to property ownership and to live a life free of crime, means that Portugal continues to be one of the safest countries in the world to live in. Therefore you are able to leave your house or apartment locked and travel as often as you like.
Leisure and Sports Options: The availability of a wide range of leisure and sports activities at an affordable cost is an added attraction. Portugal has excellent leisure facilities, such as golf and tennis clubs, with affordable membership prices. When you retire to Portugal with a mild climate, you will also have more time and opportunities to practice your chosen sport or activity, which will rarely be interrupted by rain!
Integrating: It is relatively easy to integrate into the local society as most Portuguese speak, English and at least on other language. Free Portuguese language lessons are offered in most municipal districts or residents can attend the hundreds of private language schools located throughout the country. In the Algarve or Lisbon it is not uncommon to find medical and legal professionals who have settled and set up practice in Portugal. Portuguese are predominantly Roman Catholic but religion is practiced freely therefore expats have access to a large spectrum of religions that practice their faith in their mother language. Foreign television and radio stations are available on the extensive cable TV network and Internet is accessible throughout the country, which is standard in new-build houses and apartment. Various local service providers also offer the installation of satellite TV channels such as Sky etc. Local newspapers are freely available in many languages including, English, German, Russian etc. Foreign newspapers are also available in most newsstands in tourist locations including the Algarve and Lisbon.
Regular Flights: Portugal’s privileged geographical location means it is frequently the country at which many airlines prefer to stop over in the three International Airports of Lisbon, Porto and Faro. Regular flights to more than 50 cities in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Macau and North and South America, as well as domestic flights between Porto, Lisbon, Faro and the Madeira and the Azores Islands are available. The Low Cost air carriers such as Easy Jet, Ryan Air, Vueling etc. connect Portugal to the rest of Europe with daily flights to all three airports.

Expats who have settled in Portugal are unanimous in their love for this beautiful country. They will tell you that the their biggest challenge was to adapt to the “Easy Living” Portuguese lifestyle that attracted them to this paradise.

The coffee at nine, the two hour lunch, the late evenings, the good company, the slow cooked fresh food and fantastic wine. . . What's not to love?

Why the Algarve? Why Portugal?

When wondering why so many people choose the Algarve you have to look at the bigger picture and ask, Why Portugal? The Algarve has become a popular place to holiday over the years but it is part of an amazing country and part of one of Europe’s best kept secrets.

The Algarve and places like Tavira, Albufeira, Vilamoura and Lagos forms part of an unspoilt natural paradise including the Vineyards of the Douro Valley to the North, the Silver Coast jewels of Nazare, Sao Martinho Do Porto and Obidos, the cosmopolitan heart beat of Lisbon, Estoril and Cascais, the turquoise seas of the Blue Coast, the university hub of Coimbra, the snowy mountains of Serra da Estrela, the magnificent castle of Evora and the cork plantation in the Alenteijo.

The Algarve is what it is because it is in Portugal, a truly amazing country.

The story of the Algarve almond trees

The story goes that a Scandinavian prince took his bride for a long holiday to the Algarve. The princess loved the place, the golden sun, the beautiful blue ocean, the sandy beaches. But as the princess stood on her balcony overlooking the countryside one sunset, she began to cry, the prince asked her what was wrong.

She replied that she missed home and spoke about how she missed the hills covered in snow. That night the prince ordered his men to plant thousands of almond trees all around the palace and all over the countryside.

A few days later as spring had arrived the princess stood on her balcony and watched in amazement as the trees began to blossom and blanket the entire countryside in white.

She felt like she was home.

Still to this day, in areas like Tavira on the Eastern Algarve people can still see the Almond trees blossom into spectacular white over the summer from their apartments or villas.

The Algarve . . . feel at home.

Algarve hosts the “Le Mans”: Resistance until dawn

The Le Mans Series arrives for the first time to the International Autodrome of the Algarve.Dozens of drivers fill the racetrack on the Western Algarve, neare Lagos.

Drivers start the gruelling Les Mans race on thursday, which will join GT cars (Aston Martin, Audi, Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Peugeot, Porche) versus Gasoline and Diesel prototypes.

The contest will heat up over the weekend (until Sunday) at the Autodrome Algarve (EIA) and includes five competitions: Formula Le Mans, Formula Renault 3.5; Seat Super Cup; Radical European Masters and CER.

The main race of the Le Mans Series begins on Saturday at 19:15 and ends at 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, after about 40 drivers were given the 215 laps that complete a total of one thousand kilometres.

The Portuguese legend Pedro Lamy decided not to participate in the Algarve event but that won’t keep the Portuguese fans away as there is no lack of drivers to support, because Tiago Monteiro, Francisco Cruz Martins, Frederic da Rocha, Miguel Amaral and Miguel Ramos will participate in the primary race.

“We are confident that it will be a success. So far it is exceeding expectations largely because we have 15 thousand tickets sold and all the drivers have arrived”, says Paulo Pinheiro of the Algarve Racetrack , the AIA. F
